Lymphatic Love

April 09, 20256 min read

It started for me in 2018, when I became a research queen out of necessity. Diagnosed with cancer, I quickly realised that the healthcare system in the UK — while necessary and helpful in parts — wasn’t built for whole-body healing. I wasn’t prepared to be a passive participant in my own life. So, I asked bigger questions. What could I do to support myself? How could I hold hands with both science and soul?

That’s when I found the lymphatic system.

And it didn’t start in a clinical treatment room — it started at home, in my bathroom, using a dry brush on my upper body. I didn’t fully know what I was doing, but it felt right. Gentle brushing, intuitive touch, and a moment of presence in a body that had felt anything but safe. This was self-soothing. This was my first real step toward healing.

Now, years later — cancer-free and thriving — lymphatic drainage is a non-negotiable. Not just because it helps my body release inflammation, toxins, and water retention, but because it connects me back to me.

This is where science meets soul. Where biological flow meets emotional release. And where we, as women, get to reclaim our health through rhythm, ritual, and reconnection.

The Lymphatic System: Your Internal River of Vitality

The lymphatic system is a vast network of vessels, nodes, and organs that runs parallel to your circulatory system. Unlike blood, which is pumped by the heart, lymph only moves when you move — through breath, hydration, physical activity, or manual stimulation.

Lymph carries waste products, cellular debris, excess hormones, immune cells, and toxins out of your tissues, acting like a detox drainage system for the body. When it’s flowing, your body is in purification mode. When it’s sluggish, things back up — physically and emotionally.

For women, this flow is especially vital. Our hormones cycle, shift, and surge through every life stage, and the lymphatic system helps process and remove the byproducts of that hormonal activity. If you’re holding onto weight, water, emotional stress, or chronic inflammation — this system deserves your attention.

Science says: The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in immune surveillance and inflammatory response (NCI, 2021). Manual stimulation of lymphatic flow has been shown to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and support detoxification pathways (PubMed ID: 21328269).

When the Flow Is Blocked: Signs of Lymphatic Stagnation

You might not know the words, but you know the feeling.

Physical signs:

  • Bloating or puffiness (face, stomach, breasts, legs)

  • Cellulite that doesn’t shift, even with exercise

  • Hormonal acne and chronic congestion

  • Fatigue, brain fog, heaviness in limbs

  • Compromised immunity or swollen lymph nodes

Emotional signs:

  • Feeling stuck, numb, or emotionally “full”

  • Chronic anxiety or nervous tension

  • Sensory overwhelm or emotional shutdown

Clinical observations:
In functional medicine, poor lymphatic flow is often correlated with impaired detoxification, chronic inflammation, and conditions like fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and autoimmune disorders.

How Lymphatic Care Supported Me During Immunotherapy

Unlike many cancer patients, I didn’t undergo chemotherapy — I received immunotherapy. It was powerful, but also intense. I felt like my immune system was on overdrive, constantly “on,” and my body needed gentleness, not more fight.

That’s when dry brushing and upper body self-massage became my daily check-in. Brushing gently toward my heart — starting at the collarbones and moving down the arms — I felt something release. Not just physically, but emotionally. My nervous system finally began to exhale.

This became my ritual of reclamation. Quiet, private, loving. It was me saying to my body: I’m here. I’m listening. I’ve got you.

Science says: MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) is proven to increase lymphangiomotor activity, enhancing lymphatic flow by up to 20% with consistent application (PMID: 15875730). That’s the body’s built-in detox on turbo mode.

How to Support Your Lymphatic System at Home

This doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. Here are daily and weekly practices that change everything:

Daily Rituals

  • Dry brushing – Always toward the heart, 2-3 minutes before a shower

  • Self-massage – Use fingers or a gua sha tool on the face, neck, collarbones, arms, and belly

  • Deep diaphragmatic breathing – 3–5 times per day to stimulate lymph movement

  • Rebounding (mini trampoline) or gentle bouncing

  • Hydration – Your lymph needs water to flow

💧 My daily go-to? Drink Oshun
No affiliate. Just love. Their living spring water tastes divine and aligns with everything I believe in: integrity, intention, and internal flow.

Weekly Practices

  • Epsom salt baths – Magnesium helps soothe muscles and stimulate drainage

  • Infrared sauna or steam – Sweat out what no longer serves

  • SOMA Breathwork – My weekly nervous system reset, clearing stagnant energy

  • Body brushing + breath combo – One of the most powerful ways to shift your state in under 5 minutes

What to Look for in a Lymphatic Drainage Service (UK Guide)

If you're booking a treatment, here’s what to prioritise:

Training & Technique: Look for MLD-certified therapists (Vodder or Casley-Smith).
Women’s Health Focus: You want someone who understands hormone interplay and womb health.
Trauma-Informed Touch: Especially important for women healing from stress or trauma.
Environment: Clean, soft, non-clinical spaces can make the experience feel sacred.
Aftercare Support: Reputable practitioners will guide you on hydration, rest, and movement post-treatment.

Where Science Meets Soul: The Future of Feminine Well-being

I believe in health that’s not flat, not a circle — but a sphere. Full-spectrum. Multi-dimensional. That includes body, mind, energy, and emotions.

Lymphatic care is a portal. A way to cleanse the old, welcome the new, and create inner space. When we clear the waters inside us, we see more clearly, feel more deeply, and live more freely.

This isn’t about vanity. It’s about vitality.
It’s not about detox fads. It’s about divine flow.
And it’s not just about what we remove — but what we make room for.

Let This Be Your Invitation

If you’re feeling stuck, swollen, overwhelmed or low — this is a nudge from your body.
It’s time to flow forward. One brushstroke. One breath. One glass of spring water at a time.

✨ Your body already knows how to heal.
✨ Your lymph is your whisper — are you listening?
